Painting: Enamel, Acrylic, Spray Paint on Aluminium, Steel, Wood.
‘Untitled (Colour #1)’ is part of an ongoing series of ‘Level Paintings’ which I have been developing over the past five years.
Using the language of minimalism and its associated economy of form and material, I create these simple yet complex, colourful abstract paintings from industrial materials. I work with plywood panels and enamel acrylic spray paints. This panel is inlayed with colored aluminium strips and then mounted in fabricated steel frames.
For this particular body of work, I only intend to use over the counter, industrial spray paints. I have chosen to work with a limited palette, using a commercial range of colors that create a striking, glossy finish. I like that people can buy these paints over the counter. I also like that this accessible range of colors is familiar to us and forms part of our day to day urban experience.
Designed to hang vertically or horizontally, Untitled (Colour #1) consists of different colour sections intersected by aluminium strips, each side painted a different color. This allows for a multiplicity of colour interactions and variations depending on the position of the viewer.
