About The Artwork

This painting is part of an ongoing series focused on human engagement, with and in mutually shared and sustained conceptual spaces. In these works, figurative elements morph in and out of a lexicon of imagined forms and structures, with an emphasis on dynamic interaction, and a continuously flowing psychological space. Paintings in this series are typically set in a landscape vaguely reminiscent of the North American desert west, where vast open spaces and stark light set the stage for private yet perhaps strangely familiar developments. Here, the cast off and forgotten detritus of life takes on epochal significance, and the great forces of history dissolve and disintegrate, settling into strata of geologic time. In these works, some may sense visions of a dystopian present or future, while others may sense a more optimistic space of harmonious balance. Either way, the paintings each represent unique meditative acts/visions, rooted in the artist’s faith in and pursuit of connections uncovered and formed through his work. In keeping with modes of working and artistic expression developed over the course of his career, these paintings are parts of a conceptually linked whole, where artworks act out this identity of interconnectedness, both with each other, and with the worlds in which they take form.

I work in a variety of media – drawing, painting, and sculpture, as well as installation and site specific works. I have roots in the fine art tradition, but in addition, my work is influenced and inspired by a wide range of everyday and vernacular art-making traditions. In my artistic practice I explore a variety of techniques and interests, part of a broader goal of finding connections across varied aesthetic, and social, perspectives. Through art, my goal is to engage with others, and together explore shared visionary spaces. One aspect of my practice is that I like to work with found and recycled materials, particularly in my sculpture and site-specific work – it helps me connect to the world around me, to see it and feel it more directly. My two dimensional work also regularly uses found materials, as well as an underlying process of recycling. In those works, in addition to found imagery and materials, the raw material is often my previous unsold artwork, or miscellaneous studio remnants. Recent paintings likewise incorporate a process of finding: marks, forms, and gestures are cultivated for discovery and revelation, and mined from an ever-growing stockpile of found and collected visual culture. An ephemeral spirit of exploration and discovery explores through this process new lands, experiences, and insights.
