About The Artwork

I make abstract paintings with paper. Aesthetically, I am inspired to create paintings with minimalist undertone with simple lines and geometric shapes that are sparsely apart with controlled composition in order to convey a sense of space, stillness and serenity. Also, by using paper as my main material, I want to elicit emotive experience from the viewers. Paper is a three dimensional material with its own unique attributes and qualities, so in order to paint with paper, I am required to physically mold them into a workable tool. I begin by ripping paper, put them in water and glue, and apply them in several layers on canvas. Then, I let them dry only to peel and sand down almost everything. Once the process is complete, the painting is left with a misty and hazy surface with rich fiber and texture that also encompasses an archeological quality as one can visibly sense layers having been built and destroyed. This process of craftsmanship is labor intensive, tactile, and hands on experience. As a result, my work combines elements from art, design and craft.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
