ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This watercolor piece is part of a series of similar paintings that were exhibited during my first solo show "Sarcophagi". While exploring, through my work, concepts like sexual identidy, the sexualised body and androgynity, I was intrigued by the form and symbolic nature of the cocoon; a cocoon being a transitional state of being, possessing a fluid and larval identity, ambiguous, both sexual and asexual, resembling a phalus and a womb at the same time and always open to different possibilities.

Born in Thessaloniki in 1979. I Studied Fine Arts at École supérieure d'art et design de Saint-Étienne (FR) and École Nationale Supérieure d' Art de Limoges (FR). My work has been shown in Greece and abroad (Paratiritis art gallery, TETTIX, Goethe Institut Thessaloniki, Greek Cultural Center in New York etc). In 2013 my first solo exhibition was presented at Remezzo Art Space in Thessaloniki. My artistic work on the holocaust and the Nazi occupation in Greece, as part of a group exhibition at Goethe Institut Thessaloniki, has been the subject of the documentary film "Light Thickens", directed by Lydia Konsta. The film premiered at the 18th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. My own documentary feature film "CONTACT/30 - A home for everything" participated at the 9th Greek Documentary Film Festival of Chalkida. I also work as artistic supervisor, designer and video artist for theatre productions and performances. I live and work in Thessaloniki. My artistic practice, which includes painting, photography and video, is influenced by the various aspects of the human condition such as mortality, eroticism, sexuality, body and identity. My motivations come from a personal place as well as the broadness and universality of the human experience. I am particularly interested in exploring the liminal and transitional qualities of these aspects by seeking to capture moments during a process that lay “somewhere in between”; a state of a fluid, larval identity. A place where ambiguity can lead to a diversity of possibilities. The dynamics and the liminal abstractness of the form play an essential role in evoking this state of uncertainty. My artistic aim is to create images using a language that is characterized by simplicity and a minimum of information while being allusive. In painting I often use the particular properties of the materials to explore and reflect these protean qualities. In many cases the choice of a certain material is dictated by or is a reference to the current subject of my work and that also leads to choices of non traditional painting materials. Painting and drawing with gestures and traces on the painted surface create impressions of constant mobility and shape forms, almost unconsciously, like distorted bodies, cocoons and organic matter. In photography and video, I work with my subject in a way that eliminates all these characteristics which constitute a clear and fixed identity while maintaining its essence.
