ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“¿Va o Viene?” was the first painting to be completed from my series of self-portraits called Te traje un regalito, which was inspired compositionally by Kerry James Marshall “Nude (Spotlight).” The figure is wearing a shirt from Guatemala that originally had a phrase beneath the screen-printed image stating: “Yo vengo de Guatemala ¿Y Usted Cuando va?” Instead I painted the phrase “And when are you going?” that slowly turns into “When are you coming?” as it nears the bottom of the canvas. I wanted to analyze the phrase beyond the subsurface meaning of asking someone when they will come to visit. I question the complexities of how disruptive borders are and the privileges of being able to travel back and forth between the place of origin or of our antecedents. Moreover, analyzing the reasons we travel or migrate: leisure, to reconnect, or forced displacement.
