I am a single gay man who has mental health problems. I suffer with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depression and Anxiety. I turned to painting in 2013 when a 9 year relationship gay ended. My disabilities give me the ability to visualize complex things. I paint what I feel about what I see rather than merely what I see. It was recently put to me by the buyer of my artwork, The Price of Sugar, that I often deal with emotive and hard hitting issues with a touch of humour. I think he is right. I have sold a small number of originals. Most recently, The Victorian Policeman, sold via Saatchi Art to a professional collector/ art dealer in Montreal, Canada and The Price of Sugar, to a professional collector/art dealer in London, UK. I have sold a number of originals locally and I have sold a lot of prints, which have been sold worldwide from a variety of sources. My prints have gone as far as the US and Australia. In the last few days I had an offer from a collector in Dublin for my work, Tudor Rose. However, the collector wanted to buy it NTF. I am not sure what NTF is but from my research, I think it would defeat the point of the way I create art, so I declined. I have also had an inquiry via Facebook about Purple Moon Victorian from a antique dealer in Surrey. I grew up in the shadow of Birmingham, England. The second largest city in the UK. I come from a working class back-ground. I am gay and came out to my family at the age of 16 in 1984. At first my family rejected my sexuality. AIDS was hitting the headlines as, “the gay plague,” and “it was the fault of gays,” and we “deserved it.” My family really did not understand why I had, “chosen,” to be gay. Eventually however, they realized it was not a choice and they did accept me. This conflict is documented in many of my artworks. I create three types of art. Political, LGBTQ and art that is created just because it is pretty and would look good on a wall. I work in oil paints on canvas board and also work in mixed media. Some of my artwork doesn't really fit into a defined category. It is sculpture on canvas board, using all types of materials, such as, plastic, wood, bark, glitter, fabrics, sand and metal foils. Creation process: 1. I have to create the image in my head as none are copies from other sources such as photos. I may however, take dimensions, such as size relationships from other sources. 2. My work is handmade by me.
