The inspiration for ‘Vent’ came from observing on multiple occasions two tall black pipes emerging from the water in the harbour. They are such a great shape and a true anomaly down in the heart of the business district, I wanted to capture the feeling of them taking on a slightly sinister edge at night.

Approach: Neutral colour palate but wanted to add a ‘pop colour’ pyrole red, to add strength and purpose to the image. Blending of the neutral colours whilst creating balance. I felt it important to add an element of tension into to image to represent the sinister nature of the objects hence the black mark making, straight black lines. I decided to incorporate cardboard and fabric to add more interest and depth to the painting.

I classify myself as an emerging artist having entered the world of art a little way down my career path!! I have left the corporate world behind and am now pursuing a serious career in the world of art. Having grown up in the wilds of North Norfolk, I was surrounded by seasonally changing landscapes, expansive coastlines, immense sandy beaches, large skies and infinite horizons. These have embedded in me a deep-seated need for a sense of space and infinity in my life and in my work. I paint mainly in acrylic on canvas, abstract landscapes and very much enjoy playing with colour but I decided I would challenge myself and develop a series of paintings with a very limited colour palate to try to capture mood and atmosphere. I did however sneak a little bit of colour !! My paintings are held in collections in Australia, Europe and the UK. I work from a studio in Bristol, UK.
