Vera is my 90 years old grandmother, she had a stroke and her ability to speak is dameged but she speak a lot in spite of.Totally wrong words for describing stufs in her native latvian and it sounds like poetry. Oh, but her cursing is totally on point! And her childhoods estonian and youth russian also are not affected, she can use both properly. Her name Vera has russian roots and it means Faith. So, my painting is not just about my granny, it’s about time itself and about who we are as humans and what we become.

Katrīna Gaile was born in 1982 in Riga. Since 2005, she has been participating in exhibitions in Latvia and abroad. She lives in Riga, and in addition to her creative work, she also actively participates in various social and art projects. Since her first exhibitions Katrīna Gaile has been exploring social themes in her art, with humans appearing in almost all her paintings. Katrīna is interested in the metamorphoses of a human soul like age, madness, loneliness. The characters featuring in her paintings are often strangers she has come across by chance, they are nameless but with their own intimate stories, and in the artist’s works, they are transported into a different, expanded and mystical reality.
