Virgin Mary "Axion Esti" Painting

The original icon was painted in the 7th century and since then it is placed in the Cathedral of Mt. Athos. There is also a hymn titled “Axion Esti”, which was originally written in 720AD by St Cosmas, one of the greatest hymnographers of the Christian church. The hymn began with the words “The more honorable than the Cherubim…” but was eventually added with the beginning of the words Axion Esti because of this miracle: One night at Mt. Athos, a monk was praying in front of the holly icon and when he was about to sing this hymn, one unknown monk appeared and started chanting beginning with the words AXION ESTI… that mean “It is indeed worthy to..” He later explained to the monk that he was Archangel Gabriel and that these words should be added to the original hymn and he disappeared. From that time, the words were added to the hymn and this icon was named “AXION ESTI”. It is one of the most miraculous icons of Virgin Mary.This Byzantine holy icon that is carefully painted to the tiniest detail, is the perfect prayerful wall hanging icon. This also makes the most precious gift for godmother, godfather, grandparents, wedding, baptism, or any religious occasion. It would look great on the wall, as it is an icon conducive to home prayer. ☧PROCEDURE: First of all, I prepare the wood with special materials so I can carefully sketch the figure on it. After that I start painting the basic colors and later on, I come back many times with my various brush sizes to end up to the concrete details of the Holy faces. No printing or decoupage. Just painting in the traditional Greek hagiography technique. My aim is to draw friendly and merciful holy faces so that their gentleness inspires somebody to pray and hope.
