About The Artwork
This work is part of a series of paintings and drawings I created for a recent exhibition called “losing face” a termed coined by sociologist Erving Goffman that essentially relates to a slip of character of an actor in a theatre. I became interested in Goffman’s theory that we in any social interaction we wear different “masks” that conform to accepted norms of any situation. I think this is interesting when you think about how we try and project an ideal self on social media and the inherent anxiety in trying to maintain that projected ideal for the consumption of a mass audience. This image was created from an image that was received via text message.

Andrew Moncrief is an emerging artist born and raised on Vancouver Island; presently based out of Montreal, Canada. Working predominately in painting and drawing, utilizing photography as the basis of his predominantly figurative oeuvre, Andrew explores themes of queer identity, masculinity and idealism with a focus on portraiture and figuration. Andrew has exhibited internationally in the US and Europe, most recently at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) in Salt Lake City. He has taken part in group exhibitions across Canada as well as participating in SUMMA International Art Fair in Madrid in September of 2015. He has been featured in various print publications in Canada, the US and Europe, most notably, The Advocate, French publication Feros, international design blog CityhomeCOLLECTIVE, Utah Art’s Blog 15 Bytes and is part of the private collection of Nick Cave - Chicago Illinois. Losing Face is Andrew’s fifth solo exhibition since graduating from Concordia University in 2013.
