About The Artwork

“Wet Beach” is an acrylic on canvas painting 89cmsHx89cmsWx2cmsD. It is stretched on a custom made wooden stretcher with steel corner and side braces. (Please see photographs). The canvas is exhibition quality. The painting is inspired by a series of photographs taken in Summer 2021 from the dunes overlooking the beach at Birkdale Beach, Southport, North West U.K. It is a beach painting. The initial stages of the work began with drawings and colour studies which in turn evolved into a stylised interpretation of reflected light and colour. Although the focus of the painting relates to the colour and light of a brilliant summer’s day, it can also be seen as a semi-abstract colour composition. My paintings are about atmospheres and the atmosphere here is one of contemplation and meditative, considered thought. The experience of making a painting like this is less to do with replication of what exists ‘on the surface’ and more to do with the pervading ambience, tone or mood of a place. The distinctive atmosphere or quality that seems to surround and be generated by a location and that aura is hopefully represented in composition and colour. I build my paintings in layers of thin, transparent washes of colour combined with and overworked with impasto applications. I use brushes, knives and cloths. I let the paint take its own course. I like the process of painting, so I purposefully leave in the traces of its behaviour such as the marks of knife and brush and the stream and trickle of diluted pigment. I respect and work with the nature of paint. I am continually inspired by modernists and colourists Barbara Rae, Howard Hodgkin, Gillian Ayres , John Hoyland and Mark Rothko. I look to the Impressionists to enjoy their visual responses to light and colour. The painting is shipped in a custom heavy duty cardboard crate.

I am a professional fine artist painter living in the U.K. I was born in Preston Lancashire in 1953 and have lived in different parts of the UK since. I am now based in Southport, Lancashire in the north west of the U.K. I live with my wife Sharon, who is also a practicing artist. I have been painting for many years and have worked as an art educationalist in schools and colleges for over 30 years. I also worked as an assistant head teacher at an Academy in the Wigan Education Authority.I am part of a group of professional artists based in Greater Manchester called Cross Street Arts. As well as being a fine art practitioner I currently work as Lead Assessment Writer for Art, Craft and Design at the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance – AQA. Within this role I am involved in training art teachers, writing assessment material , advisory support for art and design and in moderating student portfolios. “My work is about recording what I see, feel and hear in different locations. These locations are places that I am familiar with and frequently re-visit. Such locations are ‘footprints’ of my own life experiences, they are permeated with memories and saturated with feelings. These places are, in most cases, substantial. They exist and are part of a material world. Occasionally the locations are ethereal and are derived from sources which are abstract and transcendental. The sources here are lyrical and the settings lie within the aesthetics of sound and the expression of ‘word’. The images develop through a process of spontaneously creating fresh visual melodies over structured backgrounds that form the settings for the compositions. Whether physical or abstract the paintings are intended as glancing episodes composed within illusionistic spaces. I try to paint as automatically as possible. It’s difficult to talk about ‘mark’ and ‘colour’ as an “idea” in a rational way, yet nothing can compare with its infinite possibilities and the multiplicity of its possible meanings. A smudge, a smear, a stroke of colour can be any number of things depending on shape, transparency, density, scale and context etc. The paintings are built in layers, each subsequent layer adding to a series of cancellations which partially veil the applications of colour, and spark improvisations.
