About The Artwork

This is Kenyan political activist, women's rights and environmental campaigner Wangari Maathai. She famously founded the Green Belt Movement in the 1970s and received the Nobel Prize in 2004. A recent viral on social media stated 'Women are ****ing awesome', and it's precisely this sentiment that led me, on International Women's Day, to paint a series of portraits of outstanding females - modern 'heroines', if you like. Women's rights is very much a 'hot topic' at the moment, and with so much violence against women plastered all over the news, women's achievements often go unmentioned. The series of four, entitled 'Colourful Women' aims to correct that balance. It depicts political, social and environmental campaigners from all corners of the globe, with extroadinary life stories - just a few of the many women that I admire for their efforts to make the world a better place. The portraits are painted in Warhol-esque 'pop-art' bright, block colours - a departure from my usual style. I felt that these larger than life individuals deserved to stand out from the crowd! This canvas has hooks attached for hanging.

I am a South-London based painter specialising in portraiture. Although I did an Art Foundation course some years ago I have no formal art education aside from school and taught myself to paint. I am fascinated by people and try to capture the unique characters of my subjects by experimenting with perspective, colour and mixed media. My work often incorporates elements of humour, the macabre and fantasy to tell a story about the subjects and bring them to life, as well as transport the viewer into an alternate, escapist reality. Artistic influences include Frida Kahlo, the Chapman Brothers, Hieronymous Bosch, the work of Kubrick, Alberto Vargas, Dali.
