Juliet James (b.1971), is an artist working mainly in oils, acrylic and watercolour. In 2018, two of her paintings were selected by Grayson Perry to be exhibited in the 250th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London. Throughout 2018 and 2019 Juliet has exhibited almost continuously with galleries based in London, South East England and Rome, Italy. A graduate of Central St Martins, Juliet has been based in London and the south east of England for over 25 years. Her background is in Fashion and printed textile design, which still resonates in her artwork through her depiction of the body, love of form and texture and repeat patterns. The driving force behind Juliet’s work is a love of process, technique and experimentation. Inherently a 3-d problem-solver, she has chosen to focus on the 2-d surface of the canvas and allow dimensionality to emerge through an emotional connection with texture, colour and form. Subject matter forms the unifying bond across experiments with media. Humour, subversion and trompe l’oeil effects combine with a prevailing theme of perceptions of the human form and our reaction, culturally, to the image of the nude.
