ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is a study of construction and destruction. It came together in layers, and when things built too heavy, I scraped them away to reveal something new and build again. The scribbles add wonderful texture. There are lines in graphite, pastel, and colored crayon. The shapes carved into the white paint feel spontaneous and simple. As with most of us, my home and work life shifted dramatically while under quarantine. Every morning I went into the studio for an hour of personal work time. I created a morning routine that involved movement, music, journaling, and painting. Slowly, day after day, this collection came to fruition. Centered on a collage cloud made with a single vintage postcard, this collection explores concepts of communication over distance, handwriting as human touch, physical and implied textures, small moments of clarity within chaos, and a balance of construction and destruction. We Skim Over the Words We Don’t Know 14 x 11 inches Mixed media (collage, acrylic, graphite, pastel) on canvas, finished with spray varnish and UV protectant 2020 This piece is created on a stretched canvas. The sides are painted to match the front paintings. The piece comes wired and ready to hang. The back is labeled with the title, the painting info, materials used, and my signature, as seen in the sample image of the backside of “Notes from Our Adventure.”

Dana Caldera is a Houston, TX based artist and art professor. Dana's current artwork is made from layering found collage material into bold abstract compositions. The paper ephemera--evidence of a life lived--adds a distinctly human quality to her mixed media paintings. Dana's collages and paintings focus on combining surprising color combinations, visual and actual textures, and hand-drawn mark-making. The artwork draws you close, and upon inspection, you find moments of recognition and clarity in the larger composition.
