ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The series “Weeko as a baroque figure’’ appeared while I was working on the interpretations of Jan Van Huysum’s works. Tragically, Weeko the cat, whom I considered my child, died of an incurable illness. In trying to keep his memory alive, I decided to include him as a character in this new series, which straddles two themes: the floral and the alternative universe. I consider my work to be an immersion into art history. I say this because I draw on my excursions into artistic expression from the ancient world to contemporary provocations. I explore a full range of classical themes including nudes, landscapes, still life and various techniques such as glazing, leaking, dripping. I am most comfortable when I can merge figuratism, abstract metaphysics, surrealism and expressionism. Put simply, I would say my paintings are figuratism achieved through abstract and expressionist means.
