'What Lies Beneath-40 - Odd Colors Of Winter' 100x100 x 4 cm 39.4W X 39.4Hx1.6D" inch acrylic and oil pastel on canvas by Lies Goemans This is the fortieth painting in an ongoing series. I like to paint places that seem to exist although I have never really seen them. This could very well be a frozen lake. The border of the snowed bushes just in sight on the top. Some parts of the water are light and frozen and other parts show a deep and dark belly of the lake. Funnily enough, there are quite a few colors to see when you actually only expect grays and whites. There are some stripes and marks left by skaters. Some deeply frozen parts with relief. But maybe it is all imagination... Transparency, layering, movement, fluidity, the multiplicity of water is so exciting. There is a whole world below the surface and you can only get a glimpse of it. It mirrors the sky and it reflects you as the viewer. This painting is equipped with a suspension system, varnished and ready to hang. It is painted and signed on the side, so there is no additional frame needed.

Lies Goemans is an Amsterdam based artist who loves to travel and paint abroad. “Nature is my source of inspiration. The beauty, the grandeur, the richness of detail and also the vulnerability. She is currently working on multiple series, here at Saatchi you can find some of them: At first large waterscapes all by the name ‘What Lies Beneath’. And some smaller and bigger ones with their own title. "One of the things I love about being a painter is to feel completely free to create a place where I would like to be. I’m intrigued by the changing shapes and colors of water. Transparency, layering, movement, fluidity, the multiplicity of water is so exciting. There is a whole world below the surface and you can only get a glimpse of it. It mirrors the sky and it reflects you as the viewer." Here at Saatchi she also shows a new serie of floral portraits. Flowers that awake poetry in paint. "Look at a flower, it does not constrain itself, gives herself fully, without reservation. Pure zest for life. I want to emphasize that vitality and beauty. I pick my bouquet with care, the colors the shapes the openness. It guides me at first, then I let it go, and set it free on the canvas. It’s a sensitive, dedicated and joyous proces." Through her paintings she likes to bring the outside in and the inside out at the same time. "Every second there is a variation of color, light, structure. Nature, life really, is always changing, layered and imperceivable. To me painting is not so much about portraying reality but that what I feel and see within that reality. It’s about playing and being seriously committed at the same time. Sharing that feeling of magical beauty, making your soul feel good, celebrate what’s right with the world, that’s what I want my paintings to bring for you too." For more paintings visit her site
