About The Artwork

This late 1960’s portfolio was constructed amid gunshots, burning police cars, riots, murders, rapes, anti-war and civil rights marches and assassinations. I dragged detritus, found objects and images of discarded people from demolished houses to my studio in an abandoned coal bin at the University of Chicago. The works in this portfolio were constructed using layers of abstract painting on assemblages and combines inspired by Robert Rauschenberg. The underlying theme is to transform urban detritus into evocative works of art calling to mind the ephemeral nature of people’s lives and how quickly we are forgotten. I sold most of what I produced during that period. I held back these works for my private collection. You can’t take it with you.
