ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Stemming from her personal encounters, Kim highlights a common question when stated as an ‘artist’. The work highlights themes of identity, belonging and the human desire to be recognised. She questions the society that shapes certain perceptions of occupations and the undeniable link to its social status. Kim urges these questions to the audience: ‘Why do we have trouble accepting certain professions as it is?’, ‘What kind of image do certain professions hold?’ and ‘Have we subconsciously created these stereotypes or has society influenced our thoughts?’

Phoebe Kim is an Australian Artist based in Berlin. Her works consider self-identity through painting as a process and practice. Using oils and acrylics her paintings are abstract figurative that employ a sense of humour as they respond to conversations and situations of the everyday. Kim is interested in human behaviour, the conflicting nature of cultural identity and the perspective of the other. As a second generation Australian, she shares her personal encounters and conversations she’s faced with and often questions the dialogue that has a sense of ignorance and discrimination.
