Winter's Morn Painting

In the early hours of this snowy morning, I snuck out, leaving my sleeping family warm in their beds, as I went to capture this pristine snowscape, only to find someone had gotten up even earlier, leaving their tracks to mark their progress. The early hours of the day are full of potential, and as we go out to meet the day, we make it our own. I love how landscapes speak to the immediacy of the moment and the eternity of the present. I like to start with a colored ground, in this case, a delicate, light blue lokta paper, and paint with gouache and ink to create a painting with a sometimes gossamer like atmosphere. I use watercolor and acrylic to expand the pallette and effects. Most of my paintings, like this one depict scenes right outside of my home. Although I use photography to preserve the scene, I take a plein aire approach to achieve the lighting and immediacy of the moment. Original painting is shipped flat and unframed so it can be housed in its new home to the tastes of the collector.
