Mark Baldwin OBE I painted this piece while listening to Schubert's Die Winterreisse (Winter Journey) which is a song cycle for voice and piano (D.911, published as Op. 89 in 1828) set to 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. This painting visualises for me the abstract way I would set dance to the first song of the cycle Gute Nacht (Good Night). These figures appeared to me as I was listening to this brilliant music and allowing my body to respond in the most direct way possible straight onto the surface of the paper. The figures act as code/blue print for when I will choreograph the work for a dancer. I have "translated" this entire musical work in this way, so look out the other movements as they appear on this site. You are free to make your own dance from this score, you may read it from left to right or allow your eyes to wonder across the picture as you listen to the music. Everything is allowed.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. Former Artistic Director Rambert Dance Company London from 2002-2018. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS.
