Wolf in an Iberian Forest Painting

"Iberian Howl" was my inspiration to work on a new series of projects about the Iberian wolf. The Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus signatus) is a vulnerable species, rapidly disappearing from Portuguese land. As its name suggests, it's a species endemic from the Iberian peninsula (Portugal and Spain). In 2013 it was estimated that around 300 wolves still populate Portugal. Unfortunately, this number is likely overestimated. As the wolf represents a big threat to farmers and their animals, illegal hunting is still common practice to get rid of the natural competition. With "Wolf in an Iberian Forest" I want to remind the viewer that this beautiful creature, which lives in highly social packs, with strong bonds that last a lifetime, might not be part of the future, and that its enticing howl could be lost from Portuguese forests.
