Even as I apply layers of pigment to my canvas, I counter the freedom of my gesture with the desire to preserve the initial impression of a model’s expression. I work instinctively with my brushes and colours in spontaneous renderings of human emotion, both mine and the model’s.
I am not interested in capturing the true visage of the person. It’s the person’s energy, the way they’re sitting, the way they’re talking.
