Allan Stewart Konigsberg, known as Woody Allen, is an American director, screenwriter, actor and comedian, born December 1, 1935 in New York City. He is also the author of several plays and short stories, and performs regularly as a jazz clarinetist. Making almost one film a year since the early 1970s when his popularity exploded, Woody Allen has been one of the best-known and most prolific American filmmakers of the last forty years. Comedies of manners, often with a psychoanalytical background, are undoubtedly his favorite field, although he sometimes tries his hand at other genres. He stages himself as an actor in many of his films, often playing a character close to himself, a caricature of the New York Jewish intellectual in tragicomic, mainly sexual, existential and/or metaphysical torments. He has won numerous film awards, including four Oscars as Best Director and Best Original Screenplay - a category for which he holds the record for victories (three) and, by far, nominations (sixteen).
