ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Painting: Oil on Canvas 80x80cm (32x32 in) Stretched and unframed. Will ship in a box, with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Hanging hardware included. Edges are painted. Signed on the reverse of the canvas. This painting is part of the artist’s Fugue States collection which explores questions about identity and memory. The collection was exhibited in Belgrade in 2019. This piece is one part of two paired works. The story behind these two paintings is two sisters that experience the same event differently. The works are inspired by the idea of letting go of the past, and living in the present. The work speaks to the notion that memories are not true records of the past, and that each of our memories are subject to the effects of time. The way we remember an event is affected by our experiences, emotions, and perceptions. As we grow and change our memories change with us. The complete title of the two paintings is Your Memory of Events is Different to Mine. Drawing on visual inspiration from clouds, sunlight and nerve cells Genevieve builds up the canvas in layers. She uses transparent glazes to give the painting depth and luminescence. The forms mimic tearing fabric or a cloud pulling apart. There is a sense of fragility but also strength depicted in the bold light forms that contrast with the dark background. Let this striking work provide hope and comfort in times of uncertainty. It acts as a reminder that life is constantly flowing and changing. Nothing remains constant. This piece can be hung unframed, but if you’d like to have it framed we recommend a simple oak tray frame. Painted in rich pigmented oil paint on fine Italian Canvas –your painting will be carefully wrapped, boxed and delivered to you stretched and unframed with a certificate of authenticity and a note from the artist.
