About The Artwork

While visiting art galleries in the River North District of Chicago I looked down to the end of the street and saw this rusted and crusty infrastructure of the elevated train line and had the thought: “Hey, look at that!” For the past couple of years, I’ve been systematically making photo safaris to all the elevated lines in NYC and adding to this body of work. There’s plenty of material to keep exploring and discovering. See my other paintings from this series.

Born: Brooklyn, NY 1947 I started painting in the 1980's and took a hiatus for more than 20 years and picked up the brushes again in 2007. Stated showing again in 2009. The art I make explores the patterns, textures, and aesthetic tensions I see in manufactured objects – particularly within the confines of machinery and structures. When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, my neighborhood was near the elevated trains and I was especially attracted to the mystery and magic of the subways, city streets and exciting architecture of NYC. I was drawn to the art made by the ashcan school and precisionist artists and photographers of the earlier part of the 20th Century. And, although my style is a bit more contemporary, I think their influence is more and more evident in what I do today. I use my camera as my sketchbook, always looking for subject matter that intrigues me and makes a memorable impression. Then when transforming my reference into a piece of physical art, I make it my purpose to go beyond just a technical rendering, but also to infuse it with feeling, and I’m not happy until the art becomes an emotional experience for me, and hopefully the viewer. I think that’s what makes it art.
