Love. Man and woman have proclaimed and promised and recounted and expounded upon their love for each other in every language, in every culture, for thousands upon thousands upon thousands more of years. Found on fragments of papyrus in ancient Egypt is one such poem describing the passion and the power when two lovers kiss. The man writes: Finally I will drink life from your lips and wake up from this everlasting sleep. The wisdom of the earth in a kiss and everything else in your eyes. I kiss her before everyone that they all may see my love. And when her lips are pressed to mine, I am made drunk and need not wine. And she responds: His kisses on my lips, my breast, my hair … Come! Come! Come! And kiss me when I die. For life, compelling life, is in thy breath, and at that kiss, though in the tomb I lie, I will arise and break the bands of Death.* More than thirty centuries have now passed since these particular lovers kissed. A kiss. The kiss. Thirty centuries ago. Today. The kiss has not changed. The anticipation, the pending climax of lips upon lips, tongue upon tongue, is captured in this original oil painting, “and when her lips are pressed to mine, I am made drunk and need not wine”. M.G. AshenBrenner, a self-taught painter living near the shores of a rural lake in British Columbia, Canada (home of the 2010 Winter Olympics) is proud to present on Saatchi Art this piece from her original oil painting collection – 50 Shades. 50 Shades. It is one entire collection. In one colour. Black. Literally. 50 Shades. M.G. AshenBrenner’s skilled creation of dimension and of depth. Of blending. Of shading. Of merging. Of mingling. Toying light upon dark. From black to white with 50 shades of gray in between. Ignited with a flush of scarlet. It intensifies. The nude. The sensuous. The tempting. Bold raven black foundations expertly blended into 50 different shades, charged with hot crimson flashes, capture the beauty and sexuality of the human form. M.G. AshenBrenner’s brush strokes successfully force the black ebony pigments to birth depth and dimension through blending and shading, through light upon dark. Grounded in black. Backgrounded in gold, silver and copper leaf which when caught and reflected by the lights of the day, creates in the eyes of the voyeur, movement, magical, sensual movement. It is 50 Shades. Marrying ebony and colour in a masterful creation of sensuality and intimacy, it is truly the trilogy of today. “and when her lips are pressed to mine, I am made drunk and need not wine” is but one piece from this 50 Shades collection. Please contact the artist, M.G. AshenBrenner, directly at www.art.vpweb.ca for information on the other pieces of this collection. “In our life there is a single colour, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the colour of love.” Marc Chagall * Thank you to themagentahornet.com for your faithful collecting of ancient love poetry.

BIOGRAPHY STATEMENT Woman. Oppressed. Victimized. Enslaved. Circumcised. Sold. Chattel. Shockingly, these are the words for how a woman is described in different parts of our world in 2015. Female. Empowered. Dominant. Passion. Beauty. Intimacy. These are but some of the words one might use to describe the oil paintings of M.G. AshenBrenner. This self-taught artist, living near the shores of a rural lake in British Columbia, Canada (home of the 2010 Winter Olympics) is proud to present pieces from her two original collections – 50 Shades and Lovers of Zeus – on Saatchi Art – after the collections’ successful premiere at Art! Vancouver 2015. These two collections, though separated by countless centuries, are joined together through a marriage of ebony and colour in a masterful contrast of sensuality and intimacy from both today and the ancient worlds. 50 Shades is the trilogy of today. Bold raven black foundations blended into 50 different shades, charged with flashes of scarlet red, capture the beauty and sexuality of the human form. In contrast, but in unity, Lovers of Zeus is ancient antiquity. The pieces of this collection are powerful, they impose, they dominate, as did this unrivalled King of all Greek Gods. M.G. AshenBrenner combines a lifetime studying the traditional painting techniques of the masters with the contemporary ease of 2015. A calling from deep inside of her draws M.G. AshenBrenner to explore with her brush the female subject captured in the shadows of the day and of the night and of the dawn and of the dusk. The female. Inspired from the darker works of Rembrandt, but from today. Not passive. Powerful. Sensual. In control. Beautiful. In the 2015 movie release, Woman in Gold, Helen Mirren retells the story of Maria Altmann‘s decade long struggle to right the wrongful taking of her family’s Gustav Klimt painting. As did Klimt in his use of gold leaf, gold, silver and copper leaf are incorporated into M.G. AshenBrenner’s canvases, the oils are brushed and layered over top, and as the light of the room changes with the hours of the day, from dawn to dusk to candle light and then to dawn again, movement, depth and dimension are skillfully created. In 50 Shades, her brush strokes successfully force the black ebony pigments to birth depth and dimension through blending and shading, through light upon dark.
