crabs in a hurricane Painting

While the title's whimsical allusion to a subject other than the dynamic compositional constructs of my other works may imply that this image represents it's name sake, it still in fact is, a meta-subjective composition. That is to say, that despite being named, crabs in a hurricane, crabs though dear to my heart, were far from my mind when creating this piece. This composition is created by making the pictorial, geometric substructure of the piece the subject matter of the piece. This type of self referential composing is a manifestation of a visual jazz. Theme and variation are established by using graphic devices to form spatial paradoxes. Meter and rhythm are induced into the work through accent and counterpoint devices. The application of pigments in a glazing like technique, contrasted by staccato brush work gives mass to the composition. Formal composition techniques are evident, but set against themselves to create the drive which impels the viewer through the graphic elements. These graphic elements are discrete yet unified, like particles emerging in a field.
