Stuart Dodman is a British artist based in Brighton whose practice explores the interdependence of drawing and painting, creating works that are as much about psychological and emotional space as they are about material process. His paintings often reference interior spaces, frames, everyday objects and parts of the body, as recurring forms that evoke a sense of containment, memory, and psychological depth. Dodman approaches each painting as a search, uncovering forms through the removal of material, where absence becomes as significant as presence. Working primarily with monochromatic oil on canvas, Dodman’s process involves layering, carving, and mark-making, allowing images to emerge through subtraction. The marks made in this way are permanent: once carved or drawn into the surface, they cannot be erased, making each gesture significant and irreplaceable. This act of making emphasizes the permanence of the mark, underscoring the weight of every decision and its lasting impact on the final image. The work becomes an exploration of control and instinct, the surface functions as an imprint or residual field, where each layer holds traces of past actions, and the tension between these marks gives the painting its depth and presence. Dodman holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University. Alongside his visual art, he has worked with sound and object-based installations, with projects released internationally. His work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally and is held in private collections in the USA, Mexico, Canada, Europe and the UK. Through a focus on materiality, memory, and spatial ambiguity, Stuart Dodman’s paintings present a distinct visual language, his works have a bold physical presence while resonating with psychological depth and emotional weight.
