About The Artwork

This painting is both a transcription and a study expressing my perceptions about soldiers’ return from the war zone. Transcription as it relates to Oliver Stone’s movie “Born on the Fourth of July” and what I believe is an analogy between the exposure of Tom Cruise’s character to the community and the screen presence of his wheelchair. Study in that I invite the viewer to reflect on his own attitude toward civic duties and responsibilities towards the community. Is it sufficient to compensate physical and/or mental disabilities that are in direct relation to performing patriotic duties with brand new accessories such as a wheelchair for example? I see the wheelchair and mobility scooter as canny substitutes for commitment, a proxy offering a false sense of fulfillment as citizen with their responsibility is merely it as a mere substitute which real purpose is another shot at appeasing the collective consciousness apathy and reluctance to commit whilst providing the . I am here using the for wheelchair refering to is a very strong and of but now part of a new series I am working on. I’ve anchored it in the social reality of the ghetto and its hardship. In combining ghetto’s swag and its mode of livelihood I aim to subject the viewer to the same kind of vicarious prospects on offer today on cable TV series.

I divide my time between London and Bordeaux in France when I am not in America exploring cityscapes to inform my practice. I also tap into the broad spectrum of social sciences for which I have an immense interest. Although I would have enjoyed a career as a social scientist to investigate actively, the visual material that inspires me is also often extracted from the tabloïd press, the National Enquirer in particular, as well as popular culture and cult movies.
