Art Description

Painting: Oil on Steel.

oil on 1mm steel.
My practice is based within the tradition of still life painting, in which I explore everyday objects in relation to the subjects of space, presence and absence, and the act of making. I am interested in the notion of touch and how we, as artists, form a relationship with and understanding of our tools, animating them through movement created by the body, in particular the hand: the palm and fingertips. It is this relationship with the tool, the object, that brings me to feel somewhat sentimental towards it once it has out-lived its initial and intended life-span; causing me to hoard and collect these ‘throw-aways’ that anyone else might classify as rubbish due to their, now, lack of purpose. With a deep commitment to these forms, I allow them to re-exist – and co-exist - in my paintings and installations in both their entirety and as flattened, abstracted shapes; re-energising them, providing them with a new purpose, a secondary life - an afterlife of sorts.
