About The Artwork

My art has been influenced by modern scientific and mathematical approaches to understanding the complex order in nature. In particular, I have studied both chaos theory and fractal geometry. I am not a mathematician, and I don’t use mathematical formulas; however, the ideas of chaos theory and fractal geometry lead to the development of the compositions in my work. I have used squares, triangles and circles in my paintings, but my current series, geoChao, focuses primarily on the square and relations among squares. I allow the methods I choose to determine the composition. For example, I am presently exploring the methods of magic squares and Sudoku.

Statement Geometric Chaos (geoChao) The language of my work is based on the mathematical forms from Chaos Theory. The ideas of Chaos Theory and the method chosen by me lead to the development of the compositions in my work. I strive for an impersonal working method that is transparent to everyone. The method is bound by strict rules and these rules lead to a composition. In addition to the acrylic/oil paint on linen technique, I use pencil lines and masking tape for accuracy. The “dismantling”, removing the tape is exciting. Until this dismantling, the whole remains hidden and the surprise is great. When the work surprises me, I know something good has happened.
