Carla was born in Vlissingen, The Netherlands, in 1955, and moved to the United Kingdom in 2007. She started to paint seriously when she was 25, and took the artist name of Sophie.Over the years, both the artist and her work have developed. Her key realisation has been that the process of creation is not just one of putting down her own ideas and concepts; rather it has its own rules and asks for her cooperation. Sophie aims to capture the dynamic of the things she paints. So for instance, when she paints a sunset on canvas there are many more things to be seen than just the sun and the landscape. What is there speaks not just to the eye, but to a combination of senses. In one sense her work could be called abstract, but she sees it more as an expression of a multi-layered reality. Which is a good description also of the technique she uses.
