The emotive power of color is the central issue for me. It authors the drama, such as it is, in my work. It can evoke powerful feelings, associations and memories. It triggers the imagination and takes us away. Contrast is important. In my work unexpected colors meet, hard edges collide with soft edges, and rational structure makes nice with random, painterly incident. My paintings are meant as emotional packages for the viewer to unwrap and discover themselves. I count Hans Hoffmann among my many influences.

I've been painting, off and on, since I was 6. My mother was an interior decorator and designer in NYC and knew Jackson Pollock out near our summer home in East Hampton, NY before he blew up the art world. We lived near the Met, the Whitney and the Guggenheim which were all "playgrounds" for me. Through my college years, I studied art history and took as many studio courses as I could find. I spent weekends with friends in Providence at RISD and absorbed as much of that environment as I could. A teaching position at a small New Hampshire college afforded me a few years to develop some early work in time for my first group exhibits in Boston starting around 1975 or so. I moved to Boston in 1975 and, six months after my first large group showing, lost everything in a fire at the factory where my loft was. Back on my feet a few years later, I was selected for a major exhibition at the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art. The next few years were a blur of group shows, solo shows and a handful of commissions. In the middle of all that, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts acquired one of my paintings after a meeting with the curator and his guest, Clement Greenberg. However, the financial stress of supporting myself as an artist/cabdriver/waiter was building and in the late 80s, I took a job in advertising. After some 30 years and a move to North Carolina, I ended up retiring from a very rewarding career. For the last six years, I have returned to the life of a successful starving artist and have enjoyed some recognition in terms of sales, gallery representation, exhibitions and a large commission (144" x 72") for a luxury residential building in Washington, DC.
