I grew up on the west coast of Canada, so to say that the forest and the ocean is influential in my work would be an understatement. However, I’m not content to replicate nature; I purposely create elements like the black and white lines in this series that contrast the organic elements. I make a puzzle for myself to solve by bringing in not only crisp lines but colours, textures and shapes that don’t exist in the natural environment. The challenge is then for me to find a way to create unity that is aesthetically pleasing but not entirely comfortable. I have a hard time articulating why I’m drawn to cause such a struggle for myself in this process. I think at the root of it all, the process of painting and solving the piece so that it feels harmonious acts like a metaphor; life is a series of conflicts and solutions. Ultimately, I’m asking the viewer to participate in the resolution and I’m asking all of us if we can connect to beauty even in uncertainty.

Marlene Lowden primarily works in oil and creates large expressive paintings on canvas. She grew up in an oceanside rural town outside of Vancouver, Canada. After several years in television broadcasting, she resumed her lifelong interest in painting, drawing, and photography. She draws from her experience in video production, applying to canvas similar principles of composition and storytelling. While working and raising her two daughters, she studied with a range of instructors learning watercolour, acrylic, and oil painting techniques. Marlene is now a painter and facilitator. She is a proud alumni of Thrive Art Studios, an international collective of female artists. She worked in partnership with Place des Arts in British Columbia and Art Girl Rising to produce videos to encourage people to create art at home during the early months of the pandemic. In 2021, she was named one of 28 contemporary Canadian artists to know by Create Magazine and is honoured to be included in the All She Makes curated artist directory and the 4th Edition of their magazine. Her work was also featured in Art Seen magazine published by the Curator’s Salon in the UK. She lives and works in her hometown of Gibsons, BC Canada.
