About The Artwork
Painting background: alternating metallic acrylic paint. Image: oil, acrylic and chinese ink on wood. Large format painting. Triptych. With this series of paintings called 'our babylonic brain' , I have juxtaposed different images and tried to expose opposing time scales that are, however, synchronous. The bottom half of the triptych is part of a volcanic mountain called 'teyde' and the top half, images of soccer players from the nineteen fifties in various forms of exertion. Both are activities of massive energy occurring, however, within completely different time scales, one fleeting, the other more or less permanent, yet both within the same universe. The idea came to me when I read the last verse of a poem by Lavinia Greenlaw: There is a way into the mountain. It opens and closes and comes to rest beneath the bed of a river. Yourself as slow and sudden as rock. Above - listen! - the hidden continuous.
