About The Artwork
This painting is an image of a person being transformed in to a demographic as they journey from one home to another. What process changes real people in to narratives recored by StoryCorps and chopped up for soundbites in four-minute news briefings on NPR? If a photograph of Jose Noriega appears alongside his story of being airlifted during Operation Pedro Pan, “he” is just pixels on my phone screen. This modern-day transfiguration is a far cry from sharing a meal with Jose, but it is the sum-substance on which many of us base our opinions about “immigration”. I wonder how a painting can draw attention to these dynamics.

Henrik Soderstrom is an artist, designer, and idea enthusiast. Raised in Rochester NY by an exuberant Californian musician and a Swedish visionary, he grew up sanding beautiful historic floorboards and eating green peppers like apples from the vegetable garden. After absorbing inspiration and general excitement about life at the Rhode Island School of Design, he went on to design the set design for the Silk Road Ensemble's production of Leyli & Majnun, which opened in 2009 at the Lincoln Center in New York under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma. Henrik has enjoyed collaborating with the Society for Freshwater Science, the Music of Difference Project (whose album was nominated for a grammy in 2011), the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, and FuturPointe dance to produce shows and performances.
