Painting: Oil on Canvas.
I am often working on many of paintings in parallel, moving with great energy and speed through the work, filtering and generating a vocabulary of space, color, background and foreground. One of my principles is a shift between surface and background in the pictorial space. Brush marks or web-like structures akin to patterns are often spanning the canvas in layers and there is a deliberate disjoining of language. I work with different brushes and scales of marks attempting to achieve a contrast or discord between the various layers. This is also achieved through turning the canvas as I work on them to gain different perspective. Recent pieces seem to become more directly figurative. The idea of pattern and rhythm surfaces more strongly in recent pieces.
