About The Artwork

Addressing the figure in a way that is both humorous and poetic, Carr seeks a method of representation that addresses an intersection between abstract and figurative terminologies. Characters are drawn from the art-historical canon, to clash with avatars and references to contemporary visual culture. These characters become allegories of poetic intention, while toying with both formalist elements of abstraction as well as notions of fragmentation, both physical and psychological. Though an examination of gesture and language - processes of concealment and erasure inform a sense of ambiguity and play within the paintings.

Felix Carr (b.1993) is known for his fluid, large scale paintings that blend dreamlike figurative elements with gestural abstraction to explore contemporary portrayals of the body. Conflating painting and writing, the artist engages with the linear tradition of paint, while simultaneously exploring its limits and potentiality, particularly in relation to poetry and language. Addressing diverse reference points from the art-historical canon through to the popular imaginary, he seeks to create a rounded appraisal of the experiential and the sensory. The artist lives and works in London, having graduated with a First Class Honours from the Glasgow School of Art in 2016, when the artist was selected to exhibit in the Royal Scottish Academy as part of Scottish New Contemporaries. Since then, he has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe, with solo shows in London, Lille, and Düsseldorf, with works housed in international collections. He is the recipient of The Steven Campbell-Hunt medal, as well as the Stevenston Painting Prize (RSA).
