About The Artwork

"An Agreeable Virginity", 2015 - acrylic, latex enamel, oil pastel, paper, ink on fiberboard, 45 x 60 cm. We can choose to remain comfortably "innocent" of experience, and all the pain and confusion that goes with it, yet in the end find ourselves more tightly bound than we might have been had we risked everything when the opportunity presented itself. If Adam and Eve hadn't bitten into the apple, they would have simply remained idle prisoners of the garden forever. The palette and mood of this picture reflect those of German neo-expressionists like Anselm Kiefer or Sigmar Polke, with the use of mixed media and a subdued color scheme describing forms that rely heavily on line and texture rather than color and modeling. In this painting an MDF panel has been painted (after gesso and sanding) with a rough brushwork of thick black and white latex enamels, scrubbed with crumpled paper, then collaged with newsprint which has been itself painted with the same paints and then saturated with acrylic medium and torn into irregular pieces. Once completely dry, the resulting highly textured (but largely monochrome) surface is sanded completely smooth. Over this, a light scumble of oil pastels in pink, ochre and blue is scrubbed into the surface with turpentine, and two thin strips of red paper are collaged on the upper right and lower left. The chains are drawn onto this activated surface with dip pen in black waterproof ink and thinned white acrylic. The final image is finished with a light spray of matte UV varnish. The painting is signed and dated both front and back, with the title on the back.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in the rural Appalachian foothills of the northeastern part of the state, my childhood was surrounded by the natural world, the rigid social and cultural traditions of the deep South, the distant rumblings of 1960's social changes, and the panoramas of human existence revealed to me through reading, music and art. Most of my adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer in Birmingham, South Florida, and Dallas -- primarily in the television industry -- where I was immersed yet another hybrid universe, a fun-house world of ego, transitory celebrity, and social manipulation. These days I live and work in a cabin on the edge of the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas, decompressing.
