About The Artwork

"Black Satin", one of the final "Equations" paintings (at least for now) was totally inspired by Miles Davis' album, "On the Corner" 1972. Unlike anything anyone had ever heard, Miles created a heavily percussive rhythm section, with horns, guitar and trumpet soloing over the chattering but hypnotically rhythms. Pre-saging Hip Hop and House music by over 30 years, the music revolved around repetitive bass patterns, multiple keyboards - played brilliantly by Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Harold I. Williams and Miles himself. The music unfolded in an organic order all its own. The painting, oil and encaustic on wood panel, painted with my customary cement trowel - no brushes - is a bold statement with the usual multi-colored surrounding panels all suffused in glowing black, for which I mixed special mediums to get the right effect. It starkly contrasts the glowing white central square, painted in white encaustic with subtle directional lines spaced across to suggest rhythm and music. For me, this is among the most powerful, realized and at the same time delightful works I've ever done. I hope its message of originality in music and boldly contrasting areas excites others as much as it does me.

I am a professional artist, fashion designer and book author, living in Chicago's WestTown. My work is abstract but touches on many influences, so much so, that the images tend to be suggestive without being representational. I would say they are "abstract narratives" as they have a sense of narrative or story, even tho' abstract.
