When painting the figure I experience a sensation of being alone with the model, just one other person, who is the subject and witness for the painting. For me this relationship creates a charge of inspiration, of adrenaline, that no other subject matter can. A model’s pose is impossible to reproduce, as her or his body will shift and settle throughout the session. I encourage my models to make the pose more comfortable as the session progresses, so I am really trying to reproduce what I perceive over a period of time. My own movement while painting affects what I see, and I make choices as I work as to which point of view will represent which part of the painting. There is an assemblages of shifts in points of view. I find this to be a realism more true to my experience than, say, the frozen moment of a photograph. In my Quick Study series, I am distilling the image into the most immediate expression possible. These are quick paintings. The best are culled from the pack, having emerged from the accumulated experience of the process. Many are painted over previous images, the process lending itself to editing. This body of work emphasizes the paint, and the action of painting, as much as the image of the subject. I find this self referencing lands me firmly in the Modernist tradition. ALL ARTWORK READY TO HANG. I have painted since childhood, when I did not know what an artist was. Even now I am still defining myself as an artist. I have lived in Chicago, DC, New York and Maine, and currently live and work in Boston. I paint from life, in the landscape, before a still life or with a model. The paint is important. I want it evident in the work, not polished over. Brushstrokes and drips tell the story of the making. My work is about looking, not seeing. Looking is making choices, being deliberate. I want to compel you to look at my paintings, not merely to see them. I paint what it is like to look, not what a thing looks like.
