About The Artwork

Working with multiple horizons is an integral part of my departure into accessible storytelling. This picture uses the earth horizon and the curb as a horizon giving indication of an event, history, and the passing of time. I am moving away from abstract ethereal atmosphere and beginning to collect characters and objects to use and reuse in stories that allow the viewer to understand my personal meaning in pictures whereas this aspect of my storytelling was previously hidden in many ways. The most important object here for me is the burgundy hole in the ground which probably represents shelter in some bizarre and ironic way. I am shifting away from poetry toward literal text manifesting here in the title. This painting is acrylic on canvas with one small rectangular piece of dark blue painted paper collaged to the right of the wheel axle. Sometimes I use painted and cut paper or tape to make decisions. If it looks correct often I will just collage it there instead of painting it out.

I'm a narrative painter formerly employing landscape metaphor as a point of visual departure in abstracts. Recently I have begun to work more figuratively and with text to build accessible storylines through collage with the belief that all viewers can connect with the figure relationships. These collages serve as the laboratory for oil paintings. My subject is contemporary city life and I draw reference from street life, both contemporary and past era artists, and the evolving social construct. I work from Toronto Canada exhibiting across Canada. Artwork resides in collections in the U.S. Canada, the UK and Germany. www.riverlewis.com/ www.twitter.com/riverlewisart/ www.facebook.com/riverlewisart/ www.pinterest.com/riverlewisart/
