Iberian Mills Painting

This piece was inspired by a nostalgia to visit the Balearic Islands once again. The rural location offers a sense of a past freedom that we no longer have as a society; a freedom of living off the land in the midst of paradise. The use of gravy browning watercolor, acrylic, coffee, dry herbs and spices give the painting a rich character, finished off by crackled edges thanks to the texture created by flour. Various components to the piece, such as the mills themselves, were made separatley and later incorporated into the image. Similarly, mixed media was used elsewhere to create a textured feel and appearance. The washed and almost distorted look to the image gives off a sense of looking through the eyes of past generations, almost as if it's a memory from another life.
