As I paint very intuitively I had no idea, a sleeping woman would turn up in this painting, when I started it.
I began with broad spatula strokes across the whole canvas, just enjoying applying colour, followed by lots of different textures created with spatula and acrylic in many layers. It took about 5 months, of which the painting rested 2 months, during which I just looked at it (I usually work on 3-4 paintings at the same time) - and suddenly saw the sleeping beauty. Until that time she only consisted of abstract fragments. I fell in love with this sleeping being, so I started drawing with charcoal to make her more concrete, and for others to see her more clearly. Later I decided to leave the outlines of her body in this transparent, tender way to support the idea of her drifting into a dream. I have been inspired by Klimt in many of my paintings. Therefore I decided to give her a very decorative bedcover. It is the more obvious in the picture, which gives the sleeping woman a little more intimate space before you notice and explore her.
"In A Dream" is protected by a coating of glossy varnish.

Size: H120 cm x W200 cm x D2,4 cm (H47,24 inch x W78,74 inch x D0,94 inch)

"In A Dream" was painted on stretched canvas but will be shipped UNSTRETCHED and safely rolled in a tube.
Any professional frame shop will stretch it for you.

It can look very different, depending on the light in the room or the light you put on it. It was exhibited in different places and from this experience I recommend a decent, more intimate, warm lighting - it will bring out the character of intimacy in the painting. The gold is an important element - it always gives the room a precious atmosphere.

Bettina Charlotte's career as an artist began after a long life of exploration. Although she has traveled around geographically too, Berlin/ Germany had been her base for 54 years - in 2013 this has changed as she decided to move to the Portuguese island of Madeira. Before starting her artistic career Bettina Charlotte has explored different professions: she travelled the world as flight attendant for Lufthansa, she learned to be and worked as professional photographer, studied adult education and worked with adults for many years, was self employed and worked as systemic life coach in Berlin, Germany – these professions have given her a wide horizon of different elements of life. Because of her constant drive to be creative, art has always accompanied her during times of other professions and in 2013 she finally decided to work as full time artist when she moved to the island of Madeira to be part of the local artist community. Perhaps because of all this together--getting to know so many earthly professions--her art has turned more into the abstract and sometimes metaphysical. Her special ability is intuitive painting in a gestural expressive way – she calls it “The Art to Listen to Your Heart” which she also teaches in workshops in Alentejo, on the Portuguese mainland. Bettina Charlotte spontaneously chooses the materials, tools and techniques - having fun and trusting her intuition to lead the way during the creative process is a very important factor for an authentic expression, she says. In early years she was inspired by Miro, Klimt, Klee, Picasso in painting and Rodin in sculpting. She lives and works in Portugal since 2013.
