About The Artwork

“The aesthetic of my work is born of the industrial and household materials I am using, and the playful and often nonsensical manner in which I have approached them. Initially, marks are made on found and purchased wood and other materials. Some of the marks are purely non-objective: derived only from some ambiguous, territorial, primal instinct. Yet some of the marks become more illustrative: descriptions of things I’ve experienced recently. Either way, what’s most important to me is the character of the marks, not what they are depicting. Sometimes realism is a means to that end. Throughout the entire process, the idea of play is naturally important to me: “what is the most fun thing I could do/make right this second?” Eventually, I begin to synthesize disparate ideas and drawings, and this is where the magic truly happens. This is where the painting begins to become something I could not have possibly conceived any other way. Using this semi-assemblage process to connect ideas allows me to make works that are simultaneously spontaneous, and within my control. I know a painting is finished when all of the parts feel harmonious and balanced. Just like the rest of my process, this decision is based entirely on intuition. My purpose is to spark a curiosity and excitement in the viewer – that they might feel a glimpse of what I felt making the work. I ask questions and present new possibilities, leaving the viewer with a trace of familiarity, but less information than is needed for a concrete conclusion.”

At the age of ten, Cameron was an established paleontologist, travelling to Utah to excavate dinosaur bones and returning to his 5th grade classroom to present the findings of his research. In middle and high school, he chased dreams of playing the trumpet and racing mountain bikes at a professional level. Late in high school, he became more intentional about his work in art class, and realized that visual art was (and is) the unlikely common denominator of all other endeavors. Cameron began receiving commissions and gaining acceptance into notable gallery shows his freshman year of college. He graduated from James Madison University in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art as well as a Pre-K-12 Visual Arts Teaching Licensure, and won the school’s award for a graduating senior with a concentration in painting. He now shows work in galleries and art fairs nationally. He has received a $2,000 Award of Excellence at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, a $2,000 Thomas J. Felton, Jr. Award of Distinction in Fine Art at the VA Beach MOCA Boardwalk Art Show, an Award of Merit at the Riverviews Artspace Annual Juried Show, The Randy Smith Memorial Award at the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival, and numerous awards and scholarships for undergraduate studies. While he is not travelling around the country to art shows, Cameron lives, works, and plays in Richmond, VA. He plays the trumpet, coaches a local youth mountain bike team, and teaches elementary art in the town of West Point 2 days/week.
