About The Artwork

I hope that my sculptural wall pieces expand in the imagination and build in the viewer a sense of magnitude and time. The work has both physical and conceptual heft with a relic-like feel while at the same time hinting at obscure technologies. Their artifact-like significance suggest missing contexts or cultures, as if they are off-world schematics, maps, ceremonial objects or mechanical components from future civilizations. The work's builderly feel, the precise proportioning and carefully constrained palette reflect my passions and inspirations which include geometry, color theory, religious iconography, astronomy, mandalas, and ancient Greek proportioning. My work is highly textural and I hope viewers get a sense of my love of materials and my vast imagination. They are composed primarily of a custom blend of plaster and concrete built on wooden panel. I often incorporate metal, wooden inlay, or whatever materials or processes serve the conceptual challenge of the piece. For instance, in my quest to create mandala-like pieces that felt both contemporary and ancient, I commissioned an oversized spirograph machine. Each piece is carefully layered, with surfaces that require hours of removing and re-applying, as I carve, sculpt, and paint the objects. The result is a masterfully constructed and imagined constantly-evolving series that feel both highly contemporary, and also a bit like plunder from an inscrutable archeological museum. Prior to my fine art career I designed award-winning architectural projects that span seven countries. My artwork has shown nationally and internationally and is held in many corporate and private collections, as well as the collections of several museums.

Curtis Olson’s mixed media artwork recalls quiet vistas of the American west. In his interpretations of landscapes, textural planes of color hint at fields, horizons, and skies, or are broken into soothing geometries. He frequently incorporates his own stark photography, which points away from traditional “post card” imagery, and looks instead toward the simple silos, gates, and barns that reflect the particular vernacular of the area where he shoots each image. In his photography Olson captures the final holdouts of the rapidly disappearing old west. The work frequently incorporates wood or patinaed metal, the metal riveted and rustic and looking as if it has perhaps just been pulled from the structures featured in Olson’s photography. The resulting abstracted landscapes create a distinct feeling of place– with the colors, textures, and photography working to create contemporary work that retains a memory of the past.
