About The Artwork

Oporto Porto is a coastal city in northwest Portugal known for its stately bridges and port wine production. In the medieval Ribeira (riverside) district, narrow cobbled streets wind past merchants’ houses and cafes. São Francisco Church is known for its lavish baroque interior with ornate gilded carvings. It would be difficult to find a more genuinely anachronistic idyll than Oporto. Oporto is one of Europe’s most fascinating but least known travel destinations. Its magnificent architecture and spectacular location overlooking the River Douro make Oporto one of the most dramatic and memorable city landscapes. Historically a city of merchants and commerce, its many elegant buildings are testament to the enterprise and vision of its industrious and independently-minded inhabitants, with their distinctive accent, quick sense of humour and famously welcoming nature. The lodges of the Port wine houses remain one of the city’s most unique attractions and However a stroll through the old city centre, now a World Heritage site, is an equally fascinating experience. The extraordinary architecture of buildings such as the Cathedral, the Clérigos Tower, São Bento Railway station and the old Stock Exchange coexists with traditional shops and trades, elegant cafés and a lively and authentic street life. The old city is the stage for the lively St. John’s street festivities traditionally held in Oporto during the last week of June. Oporto’s cultural calendar includes the Fantasporto film festival and Serralves em Festa, Portugal’s major non-stop display of contemporary arts, music and dance. Additionally, the Casa da Música and the city’s many other theatres and galleries present a rich and varied programme of exhibitions and performances by both Portuguese and international artists and musicians. Other events include the Classic and WTCC races on the Boavista Circuit and the Essência do Vinho wine show. Oporto is also justly famed as a city which enjoys its food and is home to some of Portugal’s most celebrated chefs. The city is also renowned for its vibrant night life, with its fashionable downtown bars and the constantly changing club scene of the western districts. Oporto is the hub of one of Europe’s major clothing and fashion industries and the city’s shops and malls are a magnet for shoppers. Oporto is above all a city of hidden delights, of intimate squares and gardens, traditional markets and unusual museums. It is a city of districts and quarters, each with its own special and authentic character. Stylish, eccentric, elegant or romantic.
