This painting is part of a body of work I completed in late 2017 inspired by a collection of old photographs. I loved the vintage/retro vibes of this scene, with the old classic cars in the background and the young people lounging in the foreground over their picnic. The remote looking Scottish location also gives it a timeless feel. The original photo was a tiny black and white one, approx 3cm square. In this painting I have enlarged the scene and added my own imagined colour scheme, using expressive brushstrokes to try and capture the atmosphere and joy of the moment.

The painting is on a cradled woooden panel and was made using acrylic paint for the under layers, then water-miscible oil paint on top giving texture and richness to the final surface. The painting is currently framed in a contemporary slim white wooden edge frame, but the frame can be removed prior to shipping if you would rather choose your own frame.

This panting was exhibited in OPEN - SSA & VAS Together 2018, the annual open exhibition of the Society of Scottish Artists (and Visual Arts Scotland) in the RSA Galleries, Edinburgh, 29 Jan-March 8th, 2018.

I am a figurative painter based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm inspired by everyday experience of life and especially people and nature. My paintings often focus on nature and the way people connect with the natural environment in our modern world, especially those of us living in cities and towns. I think about how important the environment is for all of us, and how the changing environment may affect our future lives. I record my ideas in sketches, photographs or plein air paintings, from which I often then develop larger works in the studio. I enjoy using the physicality and expressiveness of the materials - usually ink, acrylic paint or watercolour - to attempt to describe in visual language those strange or beautiful moments which always seem to elude capture in the written word. I am inspired by contemporary figurative artists such as Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas and Chantalle Joffe, but also by the Scottish tradition of painting including artists such as William Gillies and the Scottish Colourists, especially Cadell for his bold use of colour.
