I’ve been interested in exploring the level line in my work lately, both as a formal compositional device and as a psychological construct. Most of these paintings refer in some degree to the ultimate level we experience visually on earth: the sea’s horizon. In simple design terms, level lines usually have a calming, soothing effect, which is apparent in many of these paintings. A line can also imply infinitude—one might imagine them continuing beyond the borders of the paintings with no beginning or end. That concept is slightly more unsettling…a look into the abyss. Water seeks its own level, as the saying goes. Perhaps I’m seeking my own level as well—some kind of equilibrium in these tilted times. This painting is framed in a 1/2" wide x 2.5" deep, natural wood frame, with a 1/4" dark recessed edge between artwork and frame.

Born 1948 in Oregon, USA. Lived five years in Arizona and seven in California. Currently living in Vancouver, Washington. I'm a professional artist and muralist with many years experience. My paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the country. I have also completed numerous murals and public projects in communities and locales across the United States and Canada. My career has developed in a somewhat unconventional way, as over the years two distinct styles have emerged and seem to want to persist: a traditional style of quite literal realism and, side by side, a more intuitive one that might be described as a species of hybrid abstraction.
