About The Artwork

My work for the past 40 years has been inspired by my love of surfing, sailing, nature and the ocean. This particular digital painting was inspired by a photo I shot while on a search for surf sailing expedition for Surfer Magazine in the El Nino winter of 81/82. A friend of mine Steve Baldwin and I set out on during to sail from San Francisco to the South Pacific and back. Little did we know the time that we'd be buried in mountainous open ocean storm swells of over 100'. We spent much of our time during the search for surf running from storm after storm. The Islander 36 sailboat saved our lives at sea. It was rolled underwater numerous times by gigantic waves and always popped up to the surface each time. It barley made it back to home port in Sausalito in the spring of 1982 and all hands on deck safely departed her onto land. I've written a few stories about this adventure that have been published over the years in various books and magazines. If you'd like a copy of the story please let me know and I'll gady send you a copy. I painted it using the original 35mm film sailing file of the Islander 36 sailboat that would later save Steve's life. I scanned it and then using a digital airbrush and other photo art techniques I employ I created the digital painting. The rainbow was created from another shot I liked that I thought would give this painting the mood I wanted. I shoot my images on both 35mm slide film and digitally. I output the original artwork to either canvas or aluminum and then add acrylic paint at that time when I deem the image demands it. Acrylic paint is added to some of my pieces to highlight certain areas. This painting does not have the acrylic paint added. This particular piece was finished on 1/2 5//16 and the original has not been printed to either canvas or aluminum yet. Shipping for the original will depend on the weight of the image and where it is being shipped in the world. So the shipping details below are just a guesstimate. The file size for the original art piece is 40" x 60". Depending on the collectors preferences it can be printed on either Aluminum or Canvas as a Giclee.
